As a major league baseball team, the Boston Red Sox belong currently to the American League, Eastern division. The Boston Red Sox team is based in Boston, Massachusetts, where they started out as the formerly known Boston Americans (1901-1907). The Boston Americans changed their name to Boston Red Sox in 1908. The name Boston Red Sox back then was chosen due to the baseball players uniforms red pants and the sox part was added by newspapers wanting to use a better word than stockings in their headline. As a piece of Boston Red Sox history Fernway Park is the oldest still operating ballpark in major league baseball (April 20th, 1912-present). As one of the oldest and still on going rivalries ins ports history in North America, the Boston Red sox - New York Yankees rivalry is still going strong. It started out in 1920 when Babe Ruth was sold to the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox’s’ performance decreased.
