Father Of Baseball

Father Of Baseball

Unfortunately there was debate about who was the inventor of baseball. At one time, the inventor was said to be Abner Doubleday and it was believed at the very beginning by many, many people. However, there was never any written documentation to prove that this was the case. In 1845, Alexander Cartwright came up with a written set of rules for his Knickerbocker Base Ball Club. They are very similar to the rules we know today for baseball, but with a couple of minor differences. Since the first documentation of who may have invented the game was with the rules in 1845, Alexander Cartwright is known as the father of baseball.

The father of baseball was born on April 17, 1820 and was an American Engineer. It wasn’t until June of 1953 that Congress finally credited him with the honor of being the creator of baseball. Alexander Cartwright left New York to gold mine in California in 1849 and took his game of baseball with him wherever he went. He helped spread America’s favorite pastime across the country and helped begin to make it what it is today.

In addition to the first recorded rules, a year later, the first recorded baseball game was played in Hoboken, New Jersey. Cartwright took his rules and his team, the Knickerbocker Base Ball Club of New York and played at Elysian Fields in 1846. The kinickerbocker club played against the New York Baseball Club. Unfortunately, Cartwright’s rules couldn’t help him win because they lost the game by over 20 runs. Baseball started to thrive after the rules and games were now being recorded. Even though the teams were only charging admission every once and a while and not on a regular basis, fans were still coming to see the sport being played. However, of the Civil War in the 1860s started to create unrest and there were other things on fans’ minds besides baseball. Players that were playing the game had to go and fight the Civil War, but they took the sport with them and helped baseball start to travel across the country.

Between the soldiers from the Civil War and Cartwright traveling west in 1849, the game of baseball started to become widely known. Cartwright took his rules with him and started showing many towns how to play. And, before long, more and more clubs began to form and there were players from all over the country.

At the time, the one thing there were missing was baseball bats. Before baseball bats evolved, the players were using paddles and pretty much anything that would sail the ball. However, they started to realize that there had to be something they could make to help the ball travel further. That is where wood bats game into play. These wood bats were heavy, but they were beginning to send home runs past the fence. This was exactly the ammunition the fans needed to get back into the game.
